Day 12 - Erie, PA <3

Gulls staying aloft in the strong winds.

So our issues with the rear end seem to have subsided. I took my dad's advice, following what I had planned to do anyway, and bought some rear-end differential oil in order to top off the rear-end oil. It was a good chunk low, and took most of a quart. Took a while to be able to get under the rig far enough to reach the plug. I needed a flat surface, which was not available at our campground - which was by far the worst campground we have essentially ever seen. We made it to a local Wal-mart, where I was able to get it flat, buy the oil, and give it a try. I could get under it enough to find the plug, but didn't have enough clearance to use a wrench to get the plug out without injury. I then used the leveling blocks to raise the rear end a few inches, which took a few tries, but it worked. I got the plug out, filled it up, and the squeaks and noises all stopped. The rig is running great now, and seems faster, or at least able to go faster a bit easier, which makes sense if the axle wasn't getting enough lubrication before.

We attempted to camp at a wal mart near Youngstown, OH, but the landlord did not allow it upon calling to ask, as the walmart was not stand-alone, but rather built into a shopping center. We traveled up the road about 10 miles, through downtown (which was a bit challenging) to camp at a Walmart that did allow overnight stays. We enjoyed our Friday night, as we grabbed a bite to eat at Pimenti Bros, a nice bar/restaurant, where we tried the local stuff. We played some games back at home and headed to sleep.

With the Winnie working well again, I canceled the only appointment I could find for service, and we trucked onwards to Erie, PA. We were very pleased with our experience in Erie. It was our first time seeing a Great Lake, and we certainly got a full sense of the scale, as well as the variable weather conditions persistent near it. The first day was clear and gorgeous, with no white caps, clear water, and perfectly smooth stones instead of shells on the beach. It was quite the experience. The beach wasn't deserted, but it certainly wasn't too busy. It was even hot out, with the temperature around 80, so we were shocked to see that most of the tourist attractions were closed, including the neat looking amusement park.
